Project Description
Phase 2A of the Mokolo Crocodile River (West) Augmentation Project is designed to draw water from the Crocodile River near Thabazimbi and to transfer to the Mokolo River catchment through a 160km pipeline for use at the Medupi and Matimba Power Stations, the associated colliery, the Lephalale Municipality and other future users. The additional water from MCWAP-2A is required to enable Eskom’s power stations to meet the environmental emissions deadlines of April 2025, as part of Eskom’s funding conditions from the World Bank. In the long term, water is required to cater for the social needs of the Lephalale Municipality due to the growing population and future economic development, which is likely to include development of the Waterberg Coalfields as a key strategic node for the country.
