Project Description

The uMkhomazi Water Project will augment the Mgeni River System (MRS), the main water source that supplies about 6 million people and industries in the eThekwini Metro, and the Msunduzi Local Municipalities’ areas of jurisdiction, all of which comprise the economic powerhouse of KwaZulu-Natal. Water requirement projections indicate that the MRS is already in deficit. The scope of the project includes a new 81m high dam at Smithfield on the uMkhomazi River; conveyance infrastructure (32km, 3.5m diameter tunnel and 5 km, 2.5m diameter pipeline) to the proposed water treatment works (WTW) in the uMlazi River valley, including a balancing dam; a gravity pipeline from the proposed WTW to the Umgeni Water bulk distribution system, connecting in the area of the Umlaas Road reservoir. From Umlaas Road, water will be distributed under gravity through existing infrastructure to eThekwini.
