Project Description

The Lesotho Highlands Water Project forms part of the Integrated Vaal River System that supports development in the provinces of Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Free State, North-West, Limpopo and Northern Cape and contributes to 50-60% of South Africa’s GDP. The project stores water in the headwaters of the Orange River in Lesotho and transfers it via gravity into the headwaters of the Vaal River in South Africa to augment the yield of the Vaal River System. It is one of a number of schemes that has been developed to augment the yield of the Vaal River. The project is implemented in accordance with the provisions of the bi-national Treaty between RSA and the Kingdom of Lesotho. Phase 2 of the LHWP entails the construction of the Polihali Dam, a 38.2 km water transfer tunnel connecting the Polihali Reservoir with the Katse Reservoir to expand capacity of Phase 1 and includes access roads to the project sites, camps, power transmission lines and administration centres.
