RECAP | Day One of the Sustainable Infrastructure Development Symposium of South Africa

(SIDSSA) 2024 opened with a masterclass on 17 March, hosted in collaboration with the National School of Government (NSG) at Stellenbosch University.

The third iteration of SIDSSA is under the stewardship of the Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Sihle Zikalala. The Minister highlighted the crucial role SIDSSA plays in bringing together critical role-players in the infrastructure investment space.

“Infrastructure is a springboard for job creation, service delivery, and economic growth,” Hon. Zikalala said.

The masterclass was moderated by NSG Principal Prof. Busani Ngcaweni, who led the event in conversation with Ms Cayley Green, Principal Professional Officer at the City of Cape Town;

Dr Nthabiseng Moleko, Development Economist and Senior Lecturer at Stellenbosch University; Ms Mapatane Kgomo, CEO

of the Municipal Infrastructure Support Agent; Dr Harry Malila, the Director-General (Administrative Head) of the Western Cape Government; and Mr Malusi Shezi, CEO of the Construction Education and Training Authority.

During the masterclass, speakers shed light on crucial aspects of infrastructure investment, including strategic planning, enhancing governmental capacity to execute ambitious projects, and bridging the investment gap in infrastructure development. Their insights provided valuable perspectives on navigating the complex landscape of sustainable infrastructure development in South Africa.
