South Africa and Qatar Forge Stronger Infrastructure Ties

Doha, Qatar – In a significant move to enhance infrastructure development and economic cooperation, Infrastructure South Africa (ISA) and Qatar’s Public Works Authority, His Excellency President Ashghal, are working towards formalizing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at accelerating infrastructure delivery and strengthening technical expertise.

The announcement follows a high-level meeting between South Africa’s Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Dean Macpherson, and Ashghal’s President, H.E. Mohammed Bin Abdulaziz Al Meer, held in Doha yesterday. The planned MoU will serve as a framework for knowledge exchange, capacity building, and collaboration on best practices in infrastructure development.

Strategic Engagements with Key Qatari Institutions

Beyond the Ashghal discussions, the South African delegation engaged with prominent Qatari leaders in investment and urban development. Meetings were held with:

His Excellency Eng. Ali Al Kuwari, CEO of Msheireb Properties, a leading urban regeneration company renowned for its smart city initiatives. Mr. Nasser Al Attiyah, Director of Emerging Markets at the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), one of the region’s largest sovereign wealth funds.

These discussions underscored South Africa’s commitment to fostering international partnerships that drive sustainable economic growth and infrastructure expansion.

A Step Towards Enhanced Bilateral Cooperation

Commenting on the engagements, Minister Macpherson emphasized the importance of global partnerships in achieving South Africa’s infrastructure goals.

“Qatar has demonstrated remarkable success in infrastructure development, and through this collaboration, we aim to leverage their expertise to accelerate our own infrastructure projects in South Africa. Strengthening ties with key Qatari institutions opens new avenues for investment and skills development, ultimately benefiting our economy and citizens,” he said.

The engagements align with ISA’s broader strategy to attract investment, foster innovation, and ensure efficient infrastructure delivery. As the partnership with Qatar progresses, Infrastructure South Africa remains committed to securing international expertise and capital to drive sustainable infrastructure growth.
